First up was the mixed vegetables. Now, these were from a can, which I don't know if that was the best way to go, but we attempted this concoction at 3 meals over 2 days, and each time it was the same reaction. Sadly, I could relate to my son, since I probably would have reacted the same way since the smell alone of certain veggies can sometimes set off my gag reflex!
Tommy looks like he has NO idea what he's in store for with what Mommy prepared for him
Next up was the blueberry and raspberry mix. Not too bad the first few bites, but I think he saw how excited I was getting that he was eating something I'd made from scratch (hahaha!) for him and then he started refusing it. Tried this again 2 more meals as well, and had the same results.
On the menu another night were mashed potatoes and avocado! I LOVE mashed potatoes, but I admit without butter, it's pretty blah. And I made his from a baked potato, verses a mix. Tommy not only gagged and spit what I gave him out, but burped up some of his previous bottle. I really felt for the boy - I know when I don't like something I can sometimes have the same reaction. Now avocado is something I obviously eat when I make guacamole...no other reason. But I read somewhere that it was a good food to try with babies. Not so good for Tommy. He was just not liking it. Perhaps if it was guacamole though...
I think the lesson I learned is that I need to make the foods taste a bit better...maybe mix some carrots in with the mashed potato rather than a plain potato. He is definitely showing interest in eating something other than baby food. He got a hold of some of the Toasteds crackers and loved them (yeah, I know, he probably loved the SALT...just like his mom!) And he also had a few wagon wheels which he has been eating at school a lot this week. Still not buying into the puffs completely, though he did have one or two while we were away on vacation. And take a look at him drinking from my cup - he was enamored with this for a while. Funny, when I give him the sippy cup, all he does is bang it around and spill water. And this particular sippy cup is supposed to be a non-spill one. Ha!
(he refused the french fries; only wanted his food)
I am going to T.R.Y. not to overthink this food thing. (I did it with nursing and drove myself and everyone crazy!) Eventually, he'll start eating table food, when he's ready. I admit I need to do a better job of PREPARING some stuff for him to try. This weekend I plan to try out a few recipes from http://www.weelicious.com/ which I mentioned in a prior post. A friend whose son is one week older than Tommy has been on table food only for a few weeks and she said she tried some of the recipes recently and her son LOVED them.
Then again, perhaps if I just let him check out what's in the fridge like he did on vacation, he'll start asking to eat what's in there!
