Last Sunday, we decided to set up the twin bed in Tommy's room. For the past several weeks, Tommy had been waking up during the night anytime between 12 and 5am, and would always end up in our bed. Some nights I'd fight it, and try to convince him Mommy would lay on the floor next to him, but it was a losing battle each time, especially when Mommy was flat out exhausted every night. But as soon as that little boy's body hit our mattress, he was out. In fact, he may have been out within 3 inches of the mattress. And when we'd stay at my parents' house, he no longer slept in the pack and play, but in the big bed with Mommy. And he slept without waking up during the night.
Thus, my theory, that the problem was the MATTRESS.
Tommy's crib converted to his toddler bed, so the mattress was the same one from the beginning. H.A.R.D. Like it's supposed to be for babies. Except my toddler really isn't a baby anymore...in fact, he tells me that all the time now.
So, here we are, with a big boy, in a big boy bed.
I may have been conned into the big boy bed by this kid just so he could jump on it...his old mattress had no bounce!
First night in the big boy bed
All of his trusted "guys" right by his side
Although it looks like he's falling out here, I don't think he ever did. I took this in the morning before he woke up. Orange Guy did fall out, but on the pillows I strategically placed!
He does look pretty comfy!
We went with a Toy Story theme for the bedding, though we haven't changed any of the other decor in the room at this point, since I want to see if this is going to stick - the theme, that is. He LOVES the bed...every time we go in the room, be it at night or during the day, he yells, "look at my big boy bed!" And of course he has to jump on it...and we have to reprimand him, though we only have the mattress and boxspring set up, no frame, so it is lower to the ground. But he is very into Toy Story right now, and has been watching all 3 movies quite a bit. But he still likes his Dora, Diego, Bubble Guppies, Team Umizoomi and some Little Einsteins thrown in there as well. I'm a little devastated he is not into The Fresh Beat Band anymore, as I bought tickets to their concert in March for him. We'll still go, and I'm sure he'll love it, but he rarely wants to watch it anymore - once in a while he will randomly sit through an episode, but considering that is ALL he would watch and it was ALL that was on our DVR for months, it's definitely not his thing anymore.
We also had one day, or should I say, one HOUR of wearing big boy underwear last Saturday. Tommy suddenly has a thing for telling people that either he's naked or that they are naked - like if he walks in on John or I changing. It's rather funny. But last week he kept taking his pants and diaper off, and I kept insisting he had to wear something...and randomly asked if he wanted to put on big boy underwear. And go figure, he said yes, and ran upstairs NAKED to pick out a pair. He had them on for about 15 minutes when he told me he had to pee, which he did on the potty!
Of course, I thought to myself, there is no way it's going to be this easy, is it?
Next thing you know, we're downstairs and Tommy is upset, telling me he peed, which I did not believe at first, but sure enough, his underwear was wet and there was a huge puddle on the floor. And Tommy said, "I need a diaper." I told him it was okay, that it was an accident, and we could put on a new pair of underwear and try again, but he was so upset, only the diaper would do. I did have an egg timer that we were using to ask him every 20 minutes if he had to go, but the accident happened before the egg timer went off. Someone suggested getting training pants, which I did last weekend - they have Diego on them, and that I should have him wear those with the big boy underwear over them. So we will try that the next time my little big boy decides he's ready to try it!
