Thomas turned 3 weeks old on Thursday. The picture of him with the binky in his mouth is from Thursday, as he stretched out in his crib for a little while. The other photo is from earlier in the week when he was nice and alert and enjoying exploring the crib a little...without the binky, or "plug" as we jokingly call it since that's what my Dad used to call it when we were little, and John thinks it's a pretty funny name for it!
This week I had my first follow up with my doctor (Monday), who said I am doing great. I've lost 20 lbs. already, and while I don't know exactly how much I gained throughout the pregnancy, based on what I usually fluctuated around I only have between 8-13 extra pounds on me right now, and I feel pretty good, and am wearing some of my regular clothes (well, sweatpants, yoga pants and t-shirts anyway!). The weather is a bit back and forth here in NJ recently - today I have on shorts because it's in the 70s, but we actually had to turn the heat on the other day it was so chilly. As for the doctor, I will go back in a few weeks for another follow up/annual visit as it just works out that way, but unless I have a problem or concern, he is very happy with my recovery from a physical standpoint. He did ask how I was doing emotionally/mentally as well, and other than the "normal" emotions I said I am doing fine - nothing out of the ordinary other than I can cry just looking at little Tommy sometimes because of the miracle of life, and how he wasn't even here a month ago, but inside me! Doc said to call if I feel anything different though, but that he thinks I'm doing great. I told him and the office staff that I miss my weekly appointments with them! So much so that I wonder if I left my paperwork for them to fill out for my Family Leave from Rutgers at home on purpose so I would have to make another visit on Thursday! And I have to go back and pick it up next week when it's signed by the doctor.
We also ventured out of the house 2x this week in the car - my first time driving since giving birth! On Wednesday I dropped TJ off at my friend Denise's and I went for a manicure and pedicure. TJ slept the entire time while at Denise's so he did not need the bottle I had pumped for him! Even when I got there he did not wake up so I took him home and fed him there once he woke up. Thank you Denise for watching the little man while I got pampered for a little bit!
On Thursday we dropped off my paperwork at the doctor's, had lunch at Denise's, and went to Target to pick up a few items...specifically diapers. Tommy is a pooping machine! I joked that I probably only changed about 25 diapers the past 10 years between my nieces, nephew and Denise's kids, but I can tell you I think I easily surpassed that number in less than 2 days once TJ came home! While we received a lot of diapers as shower gifts, they are all different sizes, and we easily went through 200+ newborn diapers in 2 weeks! My mom and I had some laughs thinking about the fact that when she had me and my siblings, there was only ONE size diaper and ONE size bottle - now they have all these different sizes - even the "plugs" are labele by age and we actually had trouble finding newborn size ones - but we did!
We received a ton of books for TJ at the NJ shower as well as from others as gifts, so I have been trying to read at least one book a day to him. I realize he may not be listening, but I know it can't hurt! One of the days I popped in the DVD that Aunt Maria made of Grandma and Grandpa Beurskens reading some books to TJ, and he and I loved it! He really seemed to relax listening to it, and I wanted him to recognize their voices! Great job by Grandma and Grandpa! And we have been doing some tummy time for about 5 minutes a day. I thought babies liked to be on their tummies???? Not this kid. He screams and hates it from what I can tell. But yesterday he got himself so worked up and angry that he ended up somehow rolling/pushing himself onto his back. I think it's a little early for that to be classified as a true rollover, but I of course got all excited and was applauding him and giving him tons of praise. We tried it again, but didn't happen a second time, so I think it was just a fluke and burst of energy/anger on his part! He has skinny but strong legs too - as he catapults himself into wacky positions when I am feeding him and gets himself upset because I have to reposition him.
Tomorrow we are meeting with Deacon George at our church to set up a date for the baptism, which we are right now planning for November 22nd. We usually go to 10:15am mass and the deacon asked us to get there at 9:45 to meet. Should be interesting since we could barely get ourselves to mass on time before Tommy arrived (and it's less than 2 minutes away by car), and while we ventured out last Sunday, we were late and had to sit in the "cry" room because the church was so crowded. I wish you could have seen people's reactions to him when we walked up for communion...both John and I got very emotional because people had such visible happy reactions to seeing such a new baby, and we felt so proud to be his parents!
Anyway, that's our update this week - off for another feeding so we can make sure TJ wows the doctor at his next visit (10/13) with some more weight gain!
