Tomorrow Tommy will be 2 months old! I am amazed at how quickly time has flown by! We had our 2 month check up today, which meant 2 shots, one in each leg, and an oral vaccine. He did very well, which means he screamed his head off, especially for the second shot he got. Most importantly, everyone was thrilled with his growth curve. My goal was that he be at least 9 lbs. this visit. He weighed in at 9 lbs., 1 oz, so we reached that goal! If he had not peed on the examination table just before we went to the scale, he might have even been a few ounces more!!! (yeah, right!). He was 22 1/2 inches, growing another 1.5 inches, and his head is now 39 cm, up 3 cm from last visit. While he is only in the 5th percentile for his weight, the doctor said as long as he is following his growth curve, which he is, he's fine.
We have noticed that TJ is producing more saliva and thus coughing some, which we were told is normal since he needs to get used to swallowing it. And we are seeing tears in his eyes now, though none have rolled down his cheeks yet! I have been using the saline nasal spray occasionally b/c I was too chicken to use the bulb thing to clean out some boogies, but today I used it after the saline and successfully removed some "bats" from both sides!!! Who would believe I'd be blogging about boogies????
Last night, TJ slept through the night! He has given us a few 5-6 hour stints on occasion the past few weeks, but last night he went to bed around 10:15pm and did not wake up until 6:30am. He did start stirring around 5:30am, but drifted in and out of sleep for another hour. of course, this does not mean we can expect this every night, but people were telling us to possibly expect the first sleep through the night around the 2 to 2.5 month mark. Of course, I heard it could be longer, as it was for some folks!
Tommy also made his first trip to the mall (though he has been out shopping before) on Friday with me and Grandma Barb, and then on Saturday he had his first dinner out at The Hungry Quail, which is a nearby restaurant. And since he had a bottle while we were there, we can even say that he officially ate there!
The nursing is going okay; TJ is a lazy eater/grazer, which I would say comes from me, as I could live on appetizers and snacks and be happy. But, it has been driving me to a somewhat unhealthy obsession as to whether he is getting enough or not. He does much better taking the milk I've pumped from a bottle - he doesn't have to work as hard of course, and while I wonder if we introduced the bottle too soon (see, that's part of my obsessive thoughts!), we were only giving him ONE bottle a day when we did do a bottle, which was not every day. I've heard of people whose babies refused the bottle b/c they waited too long to introduce it. And it's not that TJ was refusing me, but he was constantly falling asleep no matter how wide awake and/or hungry he was. Plus, I was constantly worrying over whether or not he was getting enough from me each feeding. So, over the weekend, I decided we would try to go with more bottles of pumped milk. We spoke at length with the doctor today about this, and she was very supportive of this decision, especially because John made sure to tell her that I was stressing myself out, which at first embarrassed me but then I was very grateful because I should have had the guts to tell her myself. A happy Mommy means a happy baby, right? I thought we might have to start supplementing with formula, but the doctor said it was not necessary, and says that based on his weight gain and what he has been taking in via the bottle, I should still produce enough milk even if I were to pump exclusively, which is probably the direction we are heading. But she said we could always add a bottle of formula into the day if it turns out I am not producing enough from pumping. So we'll see how that goes. I know I've been driving John, my mom, my sister and anyone else who I talk to about this crazy, never mind myself, and I am already feeling a lot less stressed with this new plan.
We'd like to give a special shout out to Grandpa Chris in Illinois, and wish him a very Happy Birthday for tomorrow (November 10th), when TJ will celebrat his 2 month birthday. We love you and can't wait to meet you! The above photo shows TJ in his "I'm nuts about Grandpa" shirt! We hope you have a very Happy Birthday Grandpa Chris!
