Tonight we took Tommy to see Dr. Nito for his 9-month check up. He is 20 pounds on the dot, 28 1/2 inches, and his head is 47 cm. Basically on the same curve as he's been, in the 25th-50th percentile, though he is starting to creep up in height and weight now a little. As for clothes, he is still fitting in to most of his 9 month size clothes, and of course is in the 6-12 months and has worn a few 12 month size outfits as well. I have noticed that getting some of the onesies over his head is a little more difficult for the 6-9 and 9 month sizes. Tommy's closet is jammed with clothes right now, I must say...and I know a certain Grandma that we'll be seeing this coming weekend in Chicago is going to be adding to that wardrobe. I've already been warned to leave room in our suitcase! Tommy got one shot tonight - the last part of the Hepatitis B vaccine. We did a good job distracting him so his reaction to the shot was minimal - no tears, just a brief show of discomfort and whining and he was fine. Before we saw the doctor, the nurse went through a bunch of milestone questions to see what Tommy is doing (crawling, types of food he eats, etc.). After she was done, we offered that he was already throwing a ball - not sure if that was a milestone question, but the nurse thought that was pretty amazing!
Tommy is crawling more or less - not full on crawling really, but he is on all fours, though he can't quite seem to figure out how to move the arms and legs so that he can move more quickly. He is very quick when scooting, and this weekend my mom said he moves like a "lazy Susan" because he goes around and around in circles sometimes to see what's going on. But he can get across the room. And he does crawl backwards, which I'm told is what many kids do first with the crawling.
As for food, I continue to try to incorporate some Stage 3 foods into his diet at night with dinner, but it's only working with the fruits because there really isn't any noticeable difference in the texture. The veggies, on the other hand, are another story. His facial expressions say it all when he doesn't like the texture of something - hysterical for us to look at, but the poor kid's gag reflex kicks in and he spits out what we gave him. Dr. Nito said to just keep trying, since 9-12 months ideally he should be having some table food or stage 3 foods, even if he doesn't have any teeth (and no visible signs though we know he does feel some pain every once in a while). I tried some cottage cheese with him last week and that really did not go over well. I only gave him the teeniest bit and it was like he yacked up a 4 ounce bottle of formula! I don't care for cottage cheese myself, and probably would have done the same thing, so Daddy gets to finish off what's left of that in the fridge. Tonight, we made a little progress, as he had 2 very tiny pieces of cheese that I broke off for him.
It's also really funny to watch him respond to us when you tell him "No no no!" He immediately stops what he was in the process of doing and turns to look at us. I don't even know how to describe his face - my friend Denise said it's like you told him there was no Santa Claus. They must tell him that in daycare because we haven't had to do it too often, but I have found myself doing it a bit more this past week or so because he is more mobile. He especially loves to try to open the fireplace doors, which John has a pressure mounted rod blocking the doors so they can't be opened.

Tommy in the crawling position - he does a lot of rocking back and forth and is able to push himself back into a sitting postion as well.Tommy is much more vocal lately - feedback from his teachers on his daily reports say that he is telling them lots of stories. He claps now, though usually with one open fist and one closed fist. He has also gotten back to sleeping much better most nights, with minimal wakings. Last week, we actually did have a quick visit to the doctor because of a rash on his legs. The coxsackie virus was going around school (hand foot mouth disease) so we wanted to make sure it wasn't that. The virus is actually more blister like in appearance on the feet and hands, as well as sores in the mouth and a fever. Tommy had one blister on the heel of his right foot, but that was it. The rash looked more like a heat rash type of thing, or perhaps a skin reaction to something in the air or on the floor. Dr. Nito confirmed that it was NOT coxsackie, as there was nothing in his mouth and he had not had a fever. We think the blister is from either the scooting when he drags his foot or when he bangs his foot on the ground constantly, which he seems to enjoy doing. By Saturday AM the rash was gone, so he probably has Mommy's sensitie skin.
As mentioned, Tommy and I will be heading to Chicago on Thursday night to visit John's family. John will be working Father's Day weekend at the golf club...which also means he'll be probably be playing golf Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (weather permitting) since he won't have to get home to cook Mommy dinner on those nights. He'll also get to sleep in as late as he wants to for a few days. I told him that's his Father's Day present! We will be staying with Aunt Maria and Uncle Craig, and Oma Cathy and Opa Chris will be up from Charleston as well. We'll also get to see Uncle Bryan and Craig's kids Julia and Ethan. Tommy is also hopefully going to meet Cora, who is just a few weeks older than him. Cora's mom Allison is Aunt Maria's best friend. We were due only 2 days apart so we were always comparing notes, but Cora and Tommy each had other plans, with Cora arriving about a month early, and Tommy 10 days early. We are looking forward to a fun weekend with everyone, and hopefully an uneventful trip going and coming for Tommy and I on the plane! The forecast looks like it's going to be pretty hot while we are out there so I'm off to start packing my things!
