Number 2!

Number 2, number 2, number 2....as in doing #2 on the potty...if you thought baby #2, think again.  This is all about POOPS!  I can hear my mom right now, "didn't I raise you better than to talk about pooping and farting?"  Yes, mom, you did, but as a mom now myself, it's a topic of my conversations several times a day as it relates to the Tomster.  And I can hear Tommy 20 years from now, "Mom, did you really have to blog about my poops?" Yeps!

I shared a funny story a few weeks ago that involved Tommy, the bathtub, and some brown "bath toys." Since then, the potty has been hardly used at all by Tommy at home.  He will "SOP" at daycare (sit on potty) but he never seems to go when he does. When I pick Tommy up at night, I always try to review his daily sheet before leaving in case I have any questions, even though his class teachers are gone by the time I get there. Nothing out of the ordinary usually - the teacher who gives him his dinner is usually still there so if she didn't note on the sheet what he did or didn't eat, I'll check with her, but for the most part, it's the same stuff every day with a note on how much Tommy enjoyed a certain activity the class participated in at the bottom. Well, imagine my reaction when I saw the sheet last Wednesday night:

I'm pretty sure I yelled out, "Tommy did a poopie on the potty today!???!!!!"

He was in the rec room, so I ran down there and of course asked him in front of everyone, and he responded, "YES!" Go figure, the 2 1/2  year old Tommy was so proud, and not the least bit embarrassed!  I'm sure the 22 1/2 year old Tommy will feel exactly the same way, if he reads this, right?

I did not get the full story until Friday morning since he got dropped off before either of his regular teachers were there on Thursday morning, but on Friday, Miss Susan said she could tell he had to go.  He's got a little dance of sorts that he does, and if you ask him, he usually denies it, and then you see his facial muscles contort. She was able to convince him to sit on the potty and since another child was in the stall next to him, he sat there pretty well, and then he must have started to feel what was happening, and he all of a sudden jumped up so some of the poop ended up on the floor.  They got him back on the potty though, and finished up with #1. They had a huge high five session and Tommy got some chocolate chips as a reward.

Since then, of course, nothing more has happened.  He told me he will only go pee-pee on the potty, not poopie, and when I ask why, he says that he does not want to. The teachers say that most kids are usually just scared.  Miss Susan said he is not too far off from being ready to be potty trained; he's not quite there yet, but there are signs, like the fact that he tells you he went poopie and he actually didn't yet, but then he'll go as soon as you put a new diaper on him.  Or he wants you to change his dirty diaper right away after he goes.  Even with wet diapers, he's starting to tell us that "my diaper is hurting me" if it's wet.

Here's a picture of Tommy from the beach on Saturday...it was a little too windy for us to stay for long, but we did spend an hour watching the surfers, digging in the sand, and collecting shells.  Here, it looks like he's doing a move from his poopie dance...

This is NOT an official poopie dance!

In reality, Tommy has never been the biggest beach bum, definitely not a fan of the sand, but he made a lot of progress on Saturday, wandering off barefoot a good distance away from me. On Sunday, we celebrated Tommy's friend Colin's 3rd birthday.  Colin and Tommy have been at The Growing Tree since Tommy was 4 months old, and Colin is moving onward and upward to a new program in his township.  They had a party last Thursday to celebrate all the fun and good times with Colin for the past few years, he is going to be missed so much!  Colin loves the beach, so I'm hoping we can plan some playdates this summer so the boys can hang out since they won't be in school together.  Here's a link to Colin's last day celebration on his mom Kelly's blog.

  1. It took forever for Ashtyn to feel brave enough to do #2 on the potty. And we praise her to the heavens every time--so now she thinks it needs to be a praiseworthy, tell everyone, kind of experience.
