Stinky Sixteen!

My little stinker is 16 months old! That is CRAZY! He is truly the best think that ever popped into our lives. He can cure a bad day in less than a second, and he'll make you laugh for no reason. This weekend he figured out that Mommy is really ticklish. I was laying on my stomach on the floor, and when Tommy sees anyone doing that, he sees it as an opportunity to sit or lay on top of you...and that he did. His hands ended up on my sides at just the right spot, and it tickled...I could not stop laughing, and that made him laugh, which made me laugh harder, and it was just a back and forth chain reaction between the two of us. It was such a sweet moment to share with my little guy. Of course, now he knows my weakness!

John brought Tommy to the doctor on Monday night as we were a little concerned about the lingering cough that he's had the past few weeks. He's been coughing less and less, and it's usually only in the morning and at night - rarely at school, though he has a runny nose during the day. I was pretty confident it was just a cold, and I know younger kids have colds that last a bit longer than yours or mine would. Fortunately, Dr. Nito gave us the all clear - he said it sounded like it was actually on it's way out and that within 4-5 more days he'd probably kick it on his own. We have a script to fill after that time if it hasn't improved, but the ears were clear of infection as well. Tommy's cheeks were really red and rosy the past few days which can probably be attibuted to the teething. He's been gnawing on his fingers a bit again - sometimes even while drinking his sippy cup! Dr. Nito said that his whining and clinging might be that he's feeling some pain in the ear area as a result of the teething plus the cold he has had.

We got an evaluation from Tommy's teachers this week as to how our little guy is doing. They must do this to evaluate the kids for when they should be moving up to the next class. I remember getting his last evaluation at around 9 months, about a month before his transition to this class started. I'll have to remember to ask at school. The only 2 items on what seemed like a 300 point checklist that were not "achieved" had to do with words and stringing words together. But they noted that just the past few weeks Tommy has been saying more words, and they expect he'll be talking up a storm in no time. He's very verbal, speaking 'tomish' as i like to call it - Tommy's jibberish for the official name of the language. They also noted that he is very good at understanding what you say to him, and he does a great job signing or gesturing to communicate. No worries on our end; he's already meeting some milestones that the books say are for closer to 18-20 months, and I know boys are often later than girls when it comes to speech stuff. Anything round though, is a ball - that according to Tommy!

It's so much fun to watch Tommy's personality developing before our eyes. If you tell him that Mommy's going to get her coat on, he runs to the front closet - he knows that's where the coats are. He LOVES feeding the cats their dinner every night, as the pics from the previous post show. He is testing his boundaries all the time. When he stands on his rocker or recliner, I ask him, "do you want to sit down or do you want the chair to go bye-bye?" Usually he sits down pretty quickly. But sometimes the chair does go bye-bye. The look of disappointment on his face is enough to make anyone cave, but we stick to our guns so that he eventually understands that his actions have consequences. I know this might go on for a long time, so I'm getting exercise hauling the recliner around. Tommy doesn't like to see other people cry; we all have done the "pretend" cry, and I actually don't do it much anymore because he gets so upset sometimes!

One of the funniest things we found out is that when you wipe Tommy's nose, if you ask him, "what's this?" and show him the tissue, he says "boogs!" I can't get enough of it! He enjoys pointing out different body parts that you ask him about, or he'll point to your body parts and wait for you to tell him what it is. During bathtime, he's great about putting his toys away with me. After his bath, he runs across the hall naked to his room and will often pee on the floor...he's quite amazed by it. I don't reprimand him, as he obviously does not understand, and since Mommy didn't get a diaper on him quick enough, what do any of us expect would happen?

Tommy's favorite things to do are throw balls or build towers with blocks, and then knock them down. Total boy. He occasionally will play with the Fisher price barn or garage and cars or trains, but balls and blocks are the bomb these days. He loves to kiss Tux and Tails, but he's also a bit rough with them too. Tails lets him dish it out briefly, but Tux, obviously the more intelligent cat, is on the move before Tommy even notices he's in the room most times.
Bedtime is a bit of a tug of war the past few weeks. I'm going to have to re-read some of the sleep books. We have a nightly ritual, but lately Tommy gets quite upset at bedtime. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it's not the worst thing in the world, except that sometimes Mommy falls asleep on the floor next to the crib. I know I should not be doing that - staying in the room with him, that is, but after he settles down, he doesn't even know I'm there. And he does eventually get himself settled down most nights - he does a lot of tossing and turning to get comfy I guess. Tommy is usually asleep within 30 minutes of going in the crib, which I think is pretty good, but me falling asleep on the floor when I have plenty to do for the next day is not helping! But I remind myself - it's just a phase, and this too shall pass!
