Ever have one of THOSE days? Last Wednesday was a rough day for Tommy. He hadn't had one of those in a while, so I guess it was all saved up for ONE day, resulting in FOUR phone calls to me before I finally ended up leaving work early to pick him up.
The day started off quite early - T-man was up at 6am, which hadn't happened for several weeks. He'd also woken up around 10:30pm the night before crying and was inconsolable. He ended up sleeping in our bed; we're pretty sure his molars were cutting that night and he just needed to sleep "on" one of us, as he took turns snuggling with both Mommy and Daddy. John warned Tommy's teacher to expect a tired, cranky kid that day at drop off.
8:30am - Just as I arrive at work, cell phone rings. Tommy collided with another child while they were both running around, and he ended up with a nice egg on his noggin. They put ice on it and checked him out, and he was already playing nicely with a group of kids. I said I'd check in around lunch to see how he was.
10:00am - Second call says that Tommy has a slight temperature of 99.2, which is not a cause for concern or requiring me to pick him up. I thought to myself it might have to do with the molars cutting. Teacher just wanted me to be aware in case it did go up and I got another call.
11:30am - Third call...Tommy fell asleep during art at 11am. The question was whether or not I wanted them to wake him for lunch or let him sleep and offer him lunch whenever he woke. Let him sleep, was what I said, as he might not go back to sleep, and then we'd have an even crankier kid! His temperature had gone down too, and the teacher agreed it might have been the teeth as she had noticed the molars when she checked him out after the head on collision.
1:45pm - On my way back from a nice (long) lunch, the fourth call comes in. I told my boss before I answered that I have no idea what this is going to be, but I think I need to leave and go give my boy some love though! Tommy woke up from his nap and the left side of his mouth/cheek were swolllen, and while he napped and drooled, there was blood in the drool that was on his sheet. They did not think it was a result of the molars cutting, and he was not really cooperating to let them get a look in his mouth. He did take an ice pop to help bring the swelling down, but he refused to eat anything. No temperature, and he was playing with his friends as usual. But I decided I did not want to get a fifth call that day, so I headed out, calling the pediatrician on the way to see if I could bring him in.
3:00pm - Tommy greets me with a smile and a hug, and I can see that he's swollen on the one side, though everyone assures me it's much improved from what it looked like when he woke up. I tell him we are going to see Dr. Nito, and he gets very excited. I can't even describe the sound effect he makes, but it's adorable.
3:30pm - Tommy is quite excited to see Dr. Nito. He stands up on the stool to go up on the examination table. Dr. Nito looks at me as if to ask, "is he for real?" Tommy calmly laid down on the table and let Dr. Nito check him out without a fight, flail or scream. When he asked if he could look in his mouth, T-man obliged and even opened his mouth. Amazing. He even allowed Dr. Nito to hold his lip out with the tongue depressor thing so he could show me the hematoma (aka blood blister) on the inside of Tommy's upper lip. OW!!!!!
Since I explained to Dr. Nito about the head on collision and everything else that happened, our theory is that Tommy may have bit his inner lip when that happened, and then perhaps irritated it during the nap if he unconscoiusly was gnawing at it with his lower teeth, thus the bloody drool. OR, it was just a coincidence that perhaps he bit his lip while napping, and it had nothing to do with the earlier collision. Fortunately, nothing to be worried about. Doctor's orders were for ice, motrin and TLC, all of which Mommy took care of as soon as we got home!
I knew the poor kid was hungry as he had grabbed the crackers out of his bag when we were leaving daycare and tried to eat one, but he just couldn't. At home, I offered him lots of soft foods - pears, strawberries, and then, because he was still hungry, chicken nuggets, though I didn't know that he'd eat them with the sore mouth, but the hungry boy ate three of them!
I was prepared for a long night since I didn't know how Tommy was really feeling as far as pain, but he willingly took the Motrin I offered, and slept through the night for us. He was still a little swollen the next day, and I thought he looked mean - it was kind of funny, because he is so not mean! All day I kept thinking that he looked like someone, but I could not figure out who. When I mentioned it to one of the teachers at pick up, she laughed and asked, "do you want me to tell you?" I certainly did, because I'm thinking family member and wondering who she knows in the family....and then she says, "Bart Simpson."
Duh! That is exactly who he looked like. I tried to get some pictures but they did not really do it justice. And unfortunately I am unable to upload any pictures to share right now - not exactly sure why as we now have an external memory drive (or something like that...I was half listening when I asked John something about the memory being full on the computer...). He's back to normal now, thankfully. He is much cuter when he doesn't look so mean!
Thankfully, our little guy bounced back very quickly. We feel very fortunate that we rarely get calls from daycare, but we know that when they do call us, it's for a good reason, and it shows that they truly are looking out for Tommy everyday - big things and small things. This was definitely a unique day. We've all had "one of those days", and last Wednesday happened to be one for Tommy!
What a day! Poor sweet boy! We definitely all have one of those days and it sure sounds like it was a rough one for him! He is such a trooper though and it just makes me giggle that he loves the doctor so much!.. can Carter talk to him in a few years? Haha! so glad he's on the mend and that day is just a memory now! have a great wednesday!! :)
